I‘ve always liked it when artists re-visit their catalog and present their music in new ways. Frank Zappa and Bill Frisell are two great examples of this. So I was very curious about Area 52, where Rodrigo y Gabriela reinterpret nine of their originals, with the help of a group of young Cuban musicians and some very special guests.
After listening to Pino Forastiere’s latest album From 1 to 8, and being blown away by his amazing technique and beautiful compositions, I became intrigued by his intentions behind writing the etudes that make up the album. So naturally, I asked:
Usman Riaz is a Pakistani multi-instrumentalist and composer who also happens to play a pretty mean acoustic guitar. He just released his first full-length album Circus in the Sky, a seemingly ambitious record which I’m anxiously waiting to listen to.
Originally known for playing spanish guitar, Kelly Valleau recently switched to steel-string for his new album “Vol. 2.” I asked Kelly about the switch as well as his teaching site String Training.

For his upcoming album The Lamaj Movement, he’s focusing on the story of his family and all the struggles and experiences thy’ve lived through.
When you first see Trevor Gordon Hall playing his kalimbatar, the idea might seem strange, perhaps even a little crazy. But it all makes sense once you listen to the wonderful music he creates with it. Trevor shares with us how the idea to stick a kalimba on a guitar came about, and drops some philosophy along the way…
